Improving the local neighbourhood
The Oval Partnership recognises the importance of art has been involved in a number of art projects including:
- The ‘Crypt Art’ Exhibition in St Marks crypt
- A Christmas tree made from recycled items
- Lady green fingers
However, there remains very little street art in the neighbourhood despite the presence of numerous arts organisations including
- Gasworks in Vauxhall Street -a contemporary arts organisation with 12 artist studios. It was founded in 1994 and has a programme of exhibitions and events as well as educational programmes, artists’ residencies and international fellowships.
- City &Guilds of London Art Schoo is the nearest art school followed by Chelsea School of Art and Camberwell College of Art (You might notice that their web sites are similar. That’s because they are both part of the University of Arts London).
- Oval House Theatre Gallery is just around the corner from the Oval station otherwise you have to travel a little further afield to the South London Gallery at 65 Peckham Road or GXGallery 43 Denmark Hill.
Worth a mention is the Stockwell Park Estate which has an internationally recognised graffiti project spear headed by solo-one .
Given that the number and calibre of local artists, public art still seems in short supply. Improving public art was identified as a priority in the Oval Public Realm Scoping Study. This is something the Oval Partnership would like to improve over the coming years.
