Oval Partnership Briefing Note
Traditionally, alehouses were the place for local people to meet, exchange gossip and arrange mutual help. Whether you drink or not, public houses are an important part of the cultural and architectural heritage of the area. In the UK, there are currently some 53,000 public houses but the numbers have been reducing in recent years, In 2007, the London smoking ban in public places made pubs/bars more attractive for some and less for others.
Some, like the Royal Vauxhall Tavern (winner of Fringe Report Best Venue 2010) and the White Bear with its theatre, offer much more than a traditional public house. Others like the Roebuck, provide excellent food.
