Oval Partnership Briefing Note
The New Covent Garden Market is the largest wholesale market for fresh produce in the UK employing over 2,500 people. It occupies a 57 acre site mostly in Wandsworth. The existing buildings date from the 1970s. The site suffers from numerous problems: poor internal road network, high maintenance costs, inflexible trading units, drainage issues etc. The Covent Garden Marketing Authority are developing the site in partnership with a private sector partner (The original short list of six is now down to three: Barratt Developments plc & Kier Group plc, Bouygues UK Ltd, St. Modwen Properties plc & Vinci plc). The preferred development partner is due to be selected by the autumn.)
In addition to improving the existing market, 1,750 homes, shops, cafes, restaurants, commercial spaces will be provided.
